Darren Clarke’s champions weekend returns to award winning Amendoeira Golf Resort

Amendoeira plays host to 2016 European Ryder Cup Captain & Ireland’s best young golfers for Annual Darren Clarke Foundation Champions Weekend.

The Darren Clarke Foundation Champions Weekend returned to the Amendoeira Golf Resort last month, taking advantage of the world class practice facilities and hospitality. The annual event celebrates the brightest young stars in Irish Golf, with invites extended to all the winners of the main Irish titles over the previous 12 months, and was hosted by 2016 Team Europe Ryder Cup Captain, Darren Clarke, who passed on his tips and advice to Ireland’s golfing champions.

The foundation was set up in 2002, with the aim of supporting Junior Golf in Ireland, as well as raising awareness and money for various cancer charities. The Champions Weekend is an annual event, which having been hosted at Amendoeira in 2013, returned home to Ireland for the past two years. However, the lure of the Portuguese weather, and stunning facilities on offer at Amendoeira saw the Darren Clarke Foundation return to the resort for three days of competition, tutoring and mentoring with some of Ireland’s hottest young golfing talent.

The excellent weather is always a huge factor here at Amendoeira, as well as the wonderful facilities. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all those involved at the resort, for looking after us so well; it is an ideal venue for events like ours.

Having captained Europe’s Ryder Cup team just a few weeks prior to the Champions Weekend, Clarke arrived early at Amendoeira to relax and practice before being joined by the junior champions who were treated to the luxury accommodations at the resort. Following the success of the event, Clarke was rich in praise for the resort, remarking, “The excellent weather is always a huge factor here at Amendoeira, as well as the wonderful facilities. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all those involved at the resort, for looking after us so well; it is an ideal venue for events like ours.”

Mr Christopher Howell, Chairman of Oceânico Group, was delighted to welcome Clarke back to the resort, “Darren is a fantastic ambassador for our sport, and the work his foundation does in supporting junior golf and inspiring the next generation is fantastic. We have great heritage with Ireland and Irish golfers, so we’re delighted that Clarke has made us his ‘home away from home’ for the Champions Weekend, and hope that the junior champions’ time here with Darren has inspired them to reach their golfing goals.”

As well as the two championship golf courses at Amendoeira, the Oceânico O’Connor Jnr and the Oceânico Faldo, welcoming Clarke, the resort is also home to Portugal’s only floodlit golf course; the 9-hole Academy Course is the perfect place for a short game workout and all round entertainment, which certainly proved to be the case on Saturday evening for all those involved in Clarke’s Champions Weekend.

The end of the weekend welcomed a Gala Dinner at the Amendoeira Clubhouse where Clarke presented prizes for all the winners: Alan Fahy (Under 18 Boys), Allan Hill (Under 16 Boys) and Valerie Clancy (Girls Winner).
