Sustainable Water Management
Conserving water as a precious resource is one of Amendoeira Golf Resort’s top priorities. We have implemented water-efficient practices throughout our operations, including the use of treated wastewater for watering the golf courses and gardens, reducing water flow rates, and optimising irrigation systems. All rooms are fitted with water flow restrictors, and we encourage guests to adopt responsible practices, such as reusing towels and requesting bed linen changes only when necessary. On the golf courses, adjustments have also been made to the type of grass and irrigation requirements, enabling a significant reduction in water consumption.
Energy Conservation and Emissions Reduction
We are constantly committed to energy-efficient solutions and reducing our carbon footprint. The resort features electric service vehicles, superchargers, an electric shuttle, bicycles for getting around the resort, and buggies powered by lithium batteries. We have implemented smart energy management systems in the accommodation, where the lighting and air conditioning are activated by a key switch, thereby preventing energy wastage. At the same time, we are developing energy self-consumption solutions using solar panels and new electric charging infrastructure.
Waste Reduction and Recycling
We have implemented comprehensive waste management programmes to minimise waste and promote recycling throughout the resort. We have selective collection systems and recycling bins distributed across various areas of the property, as well as dedicated spaces for green waste. In partnership with Silves Municipal Council, we are developing a composting plant that will enable us to recover organic waste and promote a more circular economy. We are also working to eliminate disposable plastics and paper, replacing them with reusable and more sustainable alternatives. We estimate that these measures will prevent the production of around 1,700 kg of plastic waste per year.
Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation
The protection of local biodiversity is an essential part of the resort’s environmental strategy. We have carried out biodiversity studies on the golf courses and within the holiday village, enabling us to implement concrete measures to conserve natural habitats. We have installed 52 nesting boxes for birds, bats and owls, promoting natural biological control and reducing the need for pesticides. We have also developed microbiological farming practices for the sustainable maintenance of green spaces, reusing pruning waste to produce mulch for composting, natural fertilisation and mulching of gardens and golf courses.
Shepherd and Flock for Natural Land Maintenance
Amendoeira Golf Resort incorporates traditional Portuguese practices by employing a local shepherd and his flock for the natural maintenance of the resort’s green spaces. This sustainable solution reduces the use of heavy machinery, fuel and pesticides, whilst contributing to fire prevention and the natural fertilisation of the soil. In addition to the environmental benefits, this initiative preserves a traditional Algarve craft and offers guests an authentic and unique experience, bringing them closer to the local culture and identity.
Air Quality and Environmental Well-being
We are committed to ensuring healthier and more sustainable environments through the implementation of air quality prevention and monitoring plans. These measures contribute to the well-being of guests, staff and the surrounding community, promoting a more balanced and environmentally conscious environment.
Sustainable Products and the Circular Economy
The olive trees on the resort’s grounds are used to produce our olive oil, soaps and, in future, candles, making the most of local resources and promoting a circular economy approach. This initiative reinforces the link between sustainability, tradition and responsible production, transforming the resort’s natural elements into sustainable products that reflect its identity.
Certifications and ESG Commitment
Amendoeira Golf Resort’s environmental commitment is recognised through international certifications and initiatives such as Green Key, Save Water, the “Sustainability Committed” seal and ESG reports. The resort is also in the process of obtaining GEO certification, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and responsible practices aligned with the highest environmental standards.
Environmental Education, Awareness and Community Engagement
We continuously invest in raising environmental awareness amongst our staff, guests and partners, fostering a culture of ecological sustainability. Through communication, training and community engagement initiatives, we encourage more conscious and responsible behaviour, contributing to a lasting positive impact in the region where we operate.
We also seek to actively support and involve the local community in projects relating to sustainability, social responsibility and cultural appreciation. We work in partnership with local organisations and promote initiatives that contribute to the region’s sustainable development, strengthening the link between the resort, the community and the Algarve’s natural and cultural heritage.
